But how rough is rough and how tough is tough and how can you measure what abuse the torch can stand up to?

The easy answer is by looking at the 'Ingress Protection Number' or IP number.

Read on as we explore how the IP rating system works.

What do the digits in IP number indicate?

There are two or three digits in the IP number which signify how well the device stands up to liquid, solid objects and mechanical impacts.

Lets take a look at each of those numbers and see what they mean:

Solid materials
This is represented by the first digit of the code and can be any number from zero to six. An item with a rating of one will be protected from gentle contact from the back of your hand while a gadget with a rating of 6 will be protected from any form of dust.

Liquids
This is represented by the second digit of the code and can be any number from zero to seven. An item with a rating of one will be protected from dripping water while LED flashlights with a rating of seven will be capable of withstanding continued pressure underwater at depths greater than one meter.

Mechanical Impact
This is represented by the letter K and a two digit number and is not usually included in listings by manufacturers. It can be any number from 00 to 10. An item with a rating of 01 will be protected from the impact of a drop of a 200 gram object from 7.5 cm height while LED flashlights with a rating of 10 will be capable of withstanding the impact of the drop of a 5 kg object from a 40 cm height.

So if you put all those together a LED flashlight with an IP rating of IP66K10

Would be protected from:

* Any form of dust
* Continued pressure underwater at depths greater than one meter
* The impact of the drop of a 5 kg object from a 40 cm height

How does IP rating affect my LED buying decision?

When you are purchasing LED flashlights online, make sure that you look for the label 'outdoor use'. This ensures minimum IP44 standard level weatherproofing of the object you are buying.

Some of the LED flashlights are open at one end and this is the reason they are able to meet the IP standard which is set at 8. If the IP rating is 8, the flashlight can be inserted in water. No dive rating is given on the flashlight.

What do the IP ratings mean for you?

When you have to buy a LED flashlight, knowing the IP number is one of the important considerations. Always check the IP number on the flashlight. If the flashlight that you are buying has higher IP ratings, they will be more expensive than the ones that have lower IP ratings. When this is the case, you need to ask yourself about the type of conditions you will be using the light. This will help you in deciding which lights to buy.

If the flashlights are something your kids are going to use in the tents for campouts, then you may not require buy one with higher IP ratings. This is because the light will not be exposed to rain as the kids will come inside as soon as it starts to rain. If you are a beginner start slowly, add just a little at a time adjusting as you go along until you have it just right. You will see in most instances that an individual herb is associated with a particular food item.

Basil is paired with tomatoes, Oregano with sauces, Rosemary with lamb and Chives with butter or cream cheese. Of course, none of them are limited to these items, but you will see them paired most often with that particular food. Use your imagination and experiment, experiment, experiment! You can make herb vinegars for salad dressings, marinades, or soups.

Herb oils are very useful in cooking whenever a recipe calls for it. Fresh herbs as garnishes dress up any dish making it look truly spectacular. Lay individual sprigs of rosemary over broiled lamb chops. Chop fresh parsley and sprinkle it over the top of your potato salad.

The combinations are endless and the outcome delicious. Fresh herbs will keep in the refrigerator for several days but then you must freeze them. They can be frozen by laying them a paper towel and putting them in a plastic bag. Once they are frozen only use them in cooking not as garnishes. A friend of mine washes them, puts them an ice cube tray, covers them with water and then freezes them.

When she needs them for soup, stews or sauces she just drops a cube in. My favorite herbs to grow are basil, oregano, lemon balm, parsley and mint. Mint is great but be careful, mint can over run your garden. A tip here would be to bury an empty coffee can and plant the mint in it. The can prevents the mint fromcreeping all through your garden.

I love to make herb butters. Take a half of a cup of softened butter and mix in about 4 tablespoons of a fresh herb. Lay out a piece of saran wrap, place the butter in the middle roll the saran wrap up to form alogout of the butter. Put in the refrigerator and anytime you need a pat of butter just cut it off the"og butter: potatoes, bread, steaks, noodles or any kind of sauce).

A fresh herb in any salad dressing really makes it sparkle. You can use any herb or a combination, be creative. I learned a trick a long time ago using basil, lemon and avocados to create and instant natural face mask. Put a big handful of basil in a blender and run it on high.

Once the basil has been pulverized, throw in a half of an avocado and a large teaspoon of lemon juice, mix until smooth. Wash your face, pat it dry and gently rub the avocado mixture on. Leave it on as long as you like, then use warm water to it wash off. These are just a few ways you can use fresh herbs from your garden. I am sure you will come up with many more. Happy cooking

Are you looking for a way to save money and help save the planet, all at once? If you haven't made the change yet, you should consider looking into alternative lighting sources for your home or business. Two important options to include in your research are compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and light-emitting diodes (otherwise known as LEDs).

A compact fluorescent lamp is more frequently referred to as a compact fluorescent light or an energy saving light. It is designed to replace the incandescent bulbs that have been used for so long in households and businesses.

CFLs produce the same amount of light as incandescent light bulbs while using a smaller amount of power and having a significantly longer life. The CFLs last between 8 and 15 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

The most efficient way to maximize the lifetime of your CFLs is to allow them to stay on for an extended period of time. If you only use the CFL for small amounts of time, then you reduce the life of the bulb; you could even reduce it enough to effectively give it the life span of an incandescent bulb.

As an energy saver, CFLs use between 20-33% of the power that incandescent bulbs use. Additionally, there is a decrease in heating (the CFLs do not produce as much heat as incandescent bulbs). These two factors significantly decrease the energy that is necessary.

With these benefits, CFLs tend to cost more than your average light bulb. In the long term, however, the CFL bulbs will save the average user a significant amount of money.

What is the downside then? Well, CFLs contain mercury, a hazardous substance. Subsequently, there could be contamination in your home or business if a CFL breaks. There is potential for environmental contamination. Also, CFLs emit UV rays that could potentially be hazardous to your health.

An alternative, environmentally sound technology that is still being developed is LED lighting. LEDs have many of the same advantages that CFLs provide with less of the potential hazards.

LEDs offer more than 3 to 5 times the life of CFLs. This is 35 to 50 times the average life of an incandescent bulb. Like CFLs, LEDs are very low when it comes to emitting heat. As for efficiency, an LED outputs more light per watt than its incandescent counterpart.

LEDs also light up immediately when you turn them on and they do not burnout as a result of frequent turning off and on, as CFLs tend to do.

LEDS still need several improvements however. LEDs are very sensitive to voltage and therefore need specific adapters often. Additionally, the light quality produced by LEDs is not the same as incandescent bulbs. High quality LEDs still tend to outperform CFLs in this capacity though. Off 5th on any of the intersecting streets that head away from the beach you will start to find Mexican restaurants as well as numerous Italian cafes. So just dig on that credit card in your wallets and start shopping. Now you look interested and want to find out the optimal time to go and discover Playa. Playa can be a preferred destination for tourism round the year as most of the time it's beautiful and aesthetic. Though you can swim year-round at Playa however you may have a specific climate in mind, which you find most attractive for a vacation so choose from any of the tourism months and fly to Playa. JUNE, JULY, AUGUST This is the hottest time of the year in Playa, especially mid-July and August. During these months Playa fills up and the beaches are full of vacationers. Summer is also the rainy season however the rain tends to hit once a day [if it does rain] and only for a short period. Quite often you are happy it rained as it tends to cool things down a little, at least for a short while. On a cloudless day in August the heat can be unbearable for some people. Shoes are needed because the sand can get too hot to walk on. Even walking any great distance can become a chore and if you are backpacking the extra weight can be torture. Dehydration is a major factor during the summer months as well as sun-burn.

At 12:00 noon you can get burned in 15 minutes without proper sun-block. SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, NOVEMBER This is our favorite time of the year in Playa. Partly because of the weather but also because things quiet down a bit between summer and winter high seasons. In September and October the ocean water is hot from the summer heat. The outside temperature drops making daytime temps hot but bearable. Evenings are beautiful and you can still swim at night and be comfortable. This is also hurricane season along the Atlantic coast. Hurricanes or tropical storms can occur anytime between June and December, however the common period is September - November. It is advisable to pay close attention to weather reports during these months. We have found on-line weather services are the best place for getting current tropical storm information. DECEMBER, JANURAY, FEBUARY This is the best time of the year to travel to Playa if you don't like excruciating heat. December-January, temperatures cool down and on cloudless days swimming is just beautiful [mild temperature]. At this time of the year you get the least amount of daylight, which is something to consider, but Playa lights up at night so it's not really an issue. Humidity and rain are lowest during this period. If rain and a day of clouds do occur, things can cool down considerably.

It is advisable to take a light jacket with you just in case, to be comfortable. MARCH, APRIL, MAY Things start heating up mid-February and by April you can be roasting on the beach. Water temperatures have not caught up but outside temps have started to rise. The "rains" start in April peaking in July-August. This is a wonderful time to travel because after "Spring Break", things calm down until the summer travel season starts in late June. Water temps are warm enough to swim comfortably; it's hot but not "July-August" hot. Weather-wise, it's a great time of the year to go. So what are you waiting for? Just say a hola to the people there. GO PLAYA....
