But how rough is rough and how tough is tough and how can you measure what abuse the torch can stand up to?

The easy answer is by looking at the 'Ingress Protection Number' or IP number.

What do the digits in IP number indicate?

There are two or three digits in the IP number which signify how well the device stands up to liquid, solid objects and mechanical impacts.

Lets take a look at each of those numbers and see what they mean:

Solid materials
This is represented by the first digit of the code and can be any number from zero to six. An item with a rating of one will be protected from gentle contact from the back of your hand while a gadget with a rating of 6 will be protected from any form of dust.

Liquids
This is represented by the second digit of the code and can be any number from zero to seven. An item with a rating of one will be protected from dripping water while LED flashlights with a rating of seven will be capable of withstanding continued pressure underwater at depths greater than one meter.

Mechanical Impact
This is represented by the letter K and a two digit number and is not usually included in listings by manufacturers. It can be any number from 00 to 10. An item with a rating of 01 will be protected from the impact of a drop of a 200 gram object from 7.5 cm height while LED flashlights with a rating of 10 will be capable of withstanding the impact of the drop of a 5 kg object from a 40 cm height.

How does IP rating affect my LED buying decision?

When you are purchasing LED flashlights online, make sure that you look for the label 'outdoor use'. This ensures minimum IP44 standard level weatherproofing of the object you are buying.

Some of the LED flashlights are open at one end and this is the reason they are able to meet the IP standard which is set at 8. If the IP rating is 8, the flashlight can be inserted in water. No dive rating is given on the flashlight.

What do the IP ratings mean for you?

When you have to buy a LED flashlight, knowing the IP number is one of the important considerations. Always check the IP number on the flashlight. If the flashlight that you are buying has higher IP ratings, they will be more expensive than the ones that have lower IP ratings. When this is the case, you need to ask yourself about the type of conditions you will be using the light. This will help you in deciding which lights to buy.

Scuba. Snorkeling just doesn't cut it for me. Why don't you head to your local PADI dive shop and sign up for a Discover Scuba course. It's free and will get you in a pool with basic instruction and supervision for an hour. If you like it, take it from there. The Open water cert, costs anywhere from 250 - 350 dollars, depending on who you take it from. You really only need personal gear to start, whcih is the same as snorkeling. Mask, fins and snorkel. The rest, once you have your Open water cert, you can rent anywhere in the world.
As for dive charters, they can actually be pretty cheap. They average about 50 bucks for a two tank dive but in some locations, can be upwards of 90 bucks.

It has put forward a challenge for WoW's new online catalog of players and their talents and armor: Find the PVP in the game, based on spec, professions and gear. WoW's PVP. Maybe other players who made the same mistakes will learn something. Gear Hunting If you don't have an addon like Atlasloot, you can always find good gear by searching for people you know who have it.

Find a character who is wearing the gear you're looking for. Search for their name, then mouse over their gear. Doing so will give you all the equipment stats, as well as where you can find the item.Mousing to the side of the item will produce the "Find an Upgrade" button. This takes you to another page with possible upgrades for the item, where to find them, the Item Level, Required Level and how relevant they are. Talent Builds Viewing the talents of successful players will give you an excellent idea of how to arrange your talents. There is absolutely no shame in copying an expert player's talent build. Many consider it to be the hallmark of a good player that one is able to utilize a well-known or oft-used talent build to its optimum levels. Ask around your guild for someone of a similar class. Look them up on the armory and see what talents they chose. Analyzing this information can provide you with valuable insights into your own talent builds.

The WoW Armory gives you a complete map Share of a character's talents, just as if you were building the talents on a talent calculator. It also includes an "Export Build" function which takes you to the WoW Talent Calculator with the talents you just saw filled in. Reputation Highly successful players pick and choose which factions they grind rep for. Let's face it: grinding reputation for each and every faction is a waste of time. Invariably, there will be some factions which do not offer anything for your character, and can be skipped.

 Looking at the factions a player you wish to emulate has ground for and which factions they skipped can save you a lot of time. Achievements and Statistics Though these are meant for fun, they can tell you a lot about a player if you are willing to sort through them. What kind of achievements a player has earned and their statistics can tell you about their play habits. Do they PvP a lot? Achievements and Statistics can tell you how much they instance, how well they do in PvP and what they like to do with their spare time. Guilds If you are shopping for a guild, the information on the Guild tab can help tremendously. It contains information on the classes, races and levels of all guild members. There is also a Guild Statistics page with charts for race and level composition. Guilds with mainly low-level members will probably not help you raid a lot. The Guild page can also show you the Guild Bank's contents and who has been accessing it lately. This can be invaluable for people wishing to know if a Guild can help them with what they need or for Guild Leaders looking to keep an eye on their Guild's investments.

Think of that gear as you would tools. Buy what you need to do the job at hand. It would be insane of you to purchase say, a Viking commercial grade dry suit to dive 70 F water, likewise buying an OMS rig for just cruising a reef would be overkill as well.
Define the type of diving you plan on doing and purchase appropriate gear both in cost and function.
1/ Mask- the rule is that it fit you. If it doesn't, then spending 150 bucks on a top end ocean master or even an Optrix is money down the toilet. Check the fit in store by holding it against your face and no strap. In hale once, through your nose, slightly. If it stays on for 30 seconds or more, it's an ok fit. Falls off? Move on to the next mask. When you're done this test with all the masks, take the ones that passed and check your field of view. The mask that offers good downward vis, decent side and is low volume is the winner. Don't buy a mask just because it has a purge valve. Just a bell and whistle and may be a source of a leak later.
2/ BC- Plan on tech diving later? You'll want lift and something that will go doubles. OMS or Dive Rite here. Cruise the reef, just about any BC made by a major manufacturer is fine so long as it fits and has the functionality you need. Gonna wreck dive eventually? You'll want pockets and D rings out your nose and something streamlined that's back inflation. Weight integrated would be a bonus but you'll pay for it.
3/ Regs- If you don't ever plan on diving a cold location, then don't spend the money on environmentals. All major brands of reg manufacturer's have decent gear and they are always trying to out do one another. Don't skimp on this part of your budget. Buy the best you can afford for the type of diving you plan on doing.Check up with www.scubadiving.com's reviews on the newest and their test results. Spend the money on a custom mouthpiece. It's worth it. Myself, I dive both Apeks and old Sherwoods. I have had a freeze with the Apeks but not with my trusty old Woodies. If there's a possibility I might get a freeze, then I dive the 'woods, if not, then the Apeks for the breathing ease.
4/ snorkel- Something that clears easily and also can be stowed in a pocket. There are a number that can fold. Personal preference here.
5/Tank- Alum 80 is the standard. No point in going steel unless you're thinking of going tech.
6/ Gauges- Think streamlined. Other than that and whether you wish to have an integrated computer on the console, all are more or less the same. Some mounts offer a canted view for your compass, some don't.
7/ Fins- Try out as many as you can before buying. Everyone's kick style is different and not all fins do well in every situation. For example, I can't stand split fins. My kick style won't work with them and I silt out wrecks with the damn things. I also dive in heavy current most of the time. I do better with Blades and oddly enough, I don't tire with them like I do with splits. Some of my pals are the opposite.
8/ Wet suit- Here's the fit thing again. Everyone's body is different. So is their tolerance of cold. If you can find one ( US Diver's makes one) get a semi dry. They're warmer but a little harder to get on or off because of the wrist , neck and ankle cuffs. Mind you, if you're diving 70F or warmer you won't be needing that. Get info on the temps in the area that you plan on diving most and what others are wearing. Manufacturers again, doesn't matter. All the major brands like Bare or Henderson, for example are good. Buy for the area you plan on diving. If You're a great lakes diver, then something with reinforced knees and elbows is a good idea. Zebra mussels will shred anything not reinforced. Same goes for gloves. Hood? Will you need one? Some suits have an integrated hood that you can choose to wear or not. Most don't so you'll need to purchase one if diving cold. Booties? Just like buying shoes, try them on and go for a walk about. Make sure there are no pinch points when you slip on your fins. It sux having great fitting , good rock climbing booties feel like they are driving a nail into you little toe when you get your fins on.
